Everyone who knows me, knows that I just love "babies". One would think that I would have gotten used to how adorable these little ones are after all these years of photographing them. But believe me, one can NEVER get used to being amazed by these great little personalities, starting out on life.

I had the opportunity to photograph parents, Lynne and Todd at their wedding seven years ago. My enjoyment has continued as they have brought each of their new family for their six month baby session. Brianna and Audrey were adorable, but their last little one is priceless. How cute is cute? You tell me.

Canadian Dream

With talk of the upcoming Canadian Junior Hockey Tournament to start on Boxing Day, Rhett and Wyatt were in competitive mode. At the last family skate that the boys took part in, at one point Rhett yells out, "The Canadians have won!" This of course is accompanied by the "fist pumps" and the "bumping of chests" to denote celebration. The fact that Wyatt, three years old is just starting to skate on his own, meant that the boys went crashing to the ice following the cheers. Not to be deterred, they got back up on their skates, put their arms around each other's shoulders and started to belt out, "Oh Canada". (Wyatt always sings Oh Canada, when I start to put on his hockey skates in the change room).

It made me laugh to see their enactment of being part of the Canadian Junior Hockey Team and reminded me of the little skaters on Saturday and Sunday mornings who are out for their first year of hockey. (Just like on television, Rhett tells me.)

Following is a short clip of their last practice and scrimmage with another of the "Mighty Little Canadians" who have hit the ice for their first year of hockey.

Happy Birthday Charlie!

Today, December 29th is the first birthday for our puppy "Charlie". Charlie came to us as a fuzzy little bundle in Mid March. His expressive eyes and alertness were early signs of a "character", which he has turned out to be. Much love and attention has been expressed in both directions and we feel fortunate to have this special little Welsh Corgi.

The Art of Christmas

Just as "Homes For The Holidays" and the Mill Street Christmas Open House are the signals for me that Christmas is coming, rounding the corner in the beautiful village of Oxford Mills and seeing the front porch of the Brigadoon lit with Christmas sparkle and greenery confirms that Christmas is on its way.

Cheryl, owner of the Brigadoon manages to create a cozy cocoon to slide away into and enjoy the ambiance of the Brigadoon with a glass of wine. Add to that beautifully prepared and presented food and you have a special Christmas experience.

Ted and I will be enjoying the joy of the season with our New Years Eve meal at this "gem in the country"!

Sunday, November 13th saw me photographing the Mill Street Christmas Open House,marking their 25th Anniversary. Joanne Plummer, owner and inspiration behind Mill Street is an entrepreneur "extraordinaire". She has created a unique style that is identifiable by everyone. The constant is creativity, freshness and impeccable workmanship. As a business woman, she is someone I try to emulate because she is always striving to improve and "raise the bar".

Not only is she an artist, but she's soon going to have to do a cookbook featuring the homemade goodies that are provided each year. This year the "little mice" took the academy award for "Best Decadence and Eye Appeal".

Fun in New Hampshire

Thanksgiving weekend was spent in New Hampshire at the home of John & Delilah's up "in the hills". (Being from the flatlands of Oxford Mills, you can't believe how exciting it is to go up, down and around the mountains in New Hampshire and Vermont). Five photographers and myself thoroughly enjoyed the opportunities to see a carriage museum, a fox hunt, olympic endurance stable and photograph beautiful models. What a great opportunity to share knowledge and become inspired.

Sue had raised these geese from birth, teaching them to swim and fly. It was amazing to see her run with the geese following and then fly into the sky towards the pond.

Special Connection

My connection with the Morrison family holds many happy memories for me. It goes back to when mom was Ruth Butler and travelled on the same high school bus. Then the opportunity to photograph two of their children's weddings, Sandra and Terry. Later I connected with Ruth again as she was a wonderful caregiver for my parents and made each visit to their home bringing good natured laughter and the ability to tell a good joke, which my father would share with everyone who came to visit.

This occasion was the celebration of the Morrison's 50th anniversary. How the family has grown, but the constant is the laughter and well being that has been present right from the beginning.

Special thanks to Earl at Stanley's Maple Farm for allowing the use of their beautiful property for the session.

Family portrait sessions allow me to reconnect with people that I have shared special times with. In this case it was an opportunity for the family to gather in honor of Ian's __th birthday. I have had the opportunity to photograph the great horses owned by Mary and Ian, portraits of Mary for her retirement portrait from teaching, the weddings of their daughters Rhonda and Shoanna and family gatherings in honor of Mary's mother. One is always surprised at how much time has elapsed and how much the family has grown and expanded. The constant though is the family banter with many laughs and the co-operation that the family has always shown me.

James Chambers Golf Classic

My brother, James passed away in November, 2009 leaving his wife Ellen, sons Greg and Ben, their families and hundreds of friends in stunned silence. For the second year now, his friends and family have organized the James Chambers Golf Classic to bring together all these great people to laugh, golf and remember this kind and sports loving man.

The entire community comes out to participate either as participants, sponsors or well wishers. It is a happy fun filled day of golf, great food and prizes, but most of all it is a day to enjoy each others company, tell stories, reconnect with old friends and remember a "salt of the earth" human being. James Chambers.

Jazz In The Garden

Peer and June Norgaard graciously opened their gardens once again to host JAZZ IN THE GARDEN. This beautiful setting with a live jazz band playing under the tent, silent and live auctions, drinks and mouthwatering appetizers and desserts is a favorite social outing of the year. All proceeds go to benefit the Room To Read program which raised thousands of dollars over the last three years to build the state of the art library in Kemptville. The generosity of the sponsors along with the diligent work of the fund raising committee is a true testament to the benevolent spirit within our community. I just wanted to let you know that a lot can happen in a year. When I arrived, I thought I was pretty big and mom and dad thought I was very small. Boy, did I change their impressions. I was wearing eighteen month old clothes at six months and I haven't let up.

Now I can talk (my language of course), walk (although I'm not yet ready to run - YET) and feed myself. Oh boy, can I put down the food!

The Kemptville Horticultural Club held a very successful garden tour, Buds To Bloom with ten very unique gardens. Each showed the diversity, creativity and ability to have their garden be an extension of each owner's personality. The complimentary tea at the Burritts Rapids Community Centre with its homemade treats and beautifully decorated in a floral theme completed a perfect rural outing.

Recently, Sue Skillen and I took the time to "smell the roses" and spent the day in Ottawa enjoying an art exhibition, photographing and of course eating at one of the great Market restaurants. One of my happiest assignments is to photograph elderly people and the loving family that surround them. Such was the occasion for the 90th birthday of Mrs Lois Armstrong as her children Janet, Susan, Billy, Penny and all their families and friends joined together to celebrate this momentous occasion. As a small child, I always remember Mrs Armstrong as a very striking and beautiful woman and it was not a surprise to me that she has attained that throughout her life. Equinelle Golf Course A Community Builder

This morning, I witnessed one of the greatest initiatives that I have seen in the North Grenville Community. It was the initial session of the Junior Golf Program offered by Equinelle Golf Course. With community minded sponsors, this golf program is free to all children and runs on Saturday mornings. Age levels of 5-6, 7-8 and 9-10 are offered with professional instruction for one hour sessions. The rain did not dampen anyones' spirits as they came out in force. Who knows what the future brings for these young golfers that Equinelle is giving the opportunity to. Thank you sponsors - thank you Equinelle for this brilliant idea!

Celebrating The Chief

It was evident from the numbers and smiles of everyone at the Municipal Centre in Kemptville that Chief Bond was a loved and respected Fire Chief. Tim Bond after twenty five years as Chief of the Fire Department, which recently won the Firemen's Games in Athens, is retiring as chief, but not as a volunteer fireman. He jokingly said he was looking forward to driving over the Bedell Bridge at 70km once again. His commitment and dedication to the fire department has resulted in an exemplary program that boasts a state of the art fire hall and a dedicated group of volunteers. Congratulations Chief!

Junk Yard Treasures

Sue Skillen, fellow photographer invited me to go outside the "norm" and do some fine art photography. Her desired objective was a junk yard and hopefully some old vehicles. We hit pay dirt when Eddie Como of Fast Eddies allowed us access to his yard. I was excited to see how beautiful rust can be. Add our good natured model, Pat and you have a perfect photographic day. Polo Anyone?

Great Day

The birthday party for Rhett (5) and Wyatt (3) was a BIG affair. Eddie Como of Fast Eddies made the boys' day as he delivered his Monster School Bus for the boys to play with all day. Friends and family enjoyed rides and climbing in this unbelievable example of creativity. To top it off, their birthday cake created by Sarah Telford was also a Monster School Bus. Sarah, one of my young 11 yr old basketball players suffered through the rigors of leukemia last year. After a successful bone marrow transplant from her older sister that saved her life, she took up cake creating and decorating as a means to pass the time while recuperating. This young lady is outstanding.

It was one of those days, when you realize how fortunate you are to have friends and family that allow you to experience the unhibited joy and excitement of youth.

Opening Meet

Tallman Reunion

The celebration of Don's 60th and Gerry's 70th birthday was a good reason for the Tallman family to unite in Kemptville. The recently completed emergency department of the Kemptville District Hospital has been named in honor of the Tallman Family. It was a wonderful opportunity for me to capture them all in front of this state of the art ward of which everyone in Kemptville and the surrounding area is very proud.

I love the romance and excitement of photographing a wedding, but nothing gives me more pleasure than completing the wedding album for the couple that will keep their special moments alive forever. Such was the case for Colleen and Michael. The album was luxurious, but the biggest thrill for me was the appreciation that both expressed on receiving their treasure. It's taking the time to express thanks that makes one feel special.

Although the temperatures were less than friendly, the city and its people more than made up for it. The art, the fashion, the architecture and the history made for a memorable photographic journey.

Karen and Burt celebrated their wedding on January 15th with family friends at the Roebuck Centre. A blustery snowy night did not stop all their guests from enjoying the opportunity to wish Karen and Buert the best. The happy couple had decided ahead of time that they wished their wedding formals to be at a later date at the historic Spencerville Mill.

Christmas Wishes

It is a time of year that we remember our past and wonder about the future. No matter how old you are, your first Christmas memories are those of your childhood. Sneaking down the stairs, seeing the bag of oranges under the tree, getting that special pony blanket with his name one it (Mr. Butch). There were Christmas Eves that Dad hitched up the horses and we went for a sleigh ride or he dressed up as Santa and we went and visited all our old friends, especially Orville and Fannie Morgan.

Then you remember your children's Christmas moments. Didi, wrapping up everything she could find in her room, placing them under the tree and then handing them out to everyone on Xmas morning. Her feelings were that the more presents under the tree, the better.

Keith receiving his Raleigh bike at ten years of age, assured that there really was a Santa, because Mom and Dad would never get him something this good.

You laugh about the Christmas family dinner at Mom and Dads when cousin Greg hid the coconut cream pie so it wouldn't be eaten until he got back for supper. Time moves on. Dad is no longer with us nor is brother James, who enjoyed giving presents at Christmas more than Santa. Our Christmas memories never grow dim. Now we are excited about creating those special memories for our own family and our grandchildren.

As all of us prepare for this Christmas Celebration, may your memories of the past bring you joy and your future hold dreams fulfilled. Merry Christmas from Betty and Ted.

Equine Canada at World Equestrian Games 2010

Earlier in the year I photographed at Millar Brooke Farm, the eight bridles that represented the collective strength of the Canadian Equestrians participating in the World Equestrian Games. Each bridle was then featured in the book, explaining the discipline, the Canadian contingent and background history in each respective sport.

The 102 page color book, under the directorship of Cheryl Tataryn and assistant editor Susan Stewart is a rich history of equine activities in Canada. The success of the Canadian Equestrian Team at WEG and this publication makes me proud to have been part of the project.

Homes For The Holiday

There are certain assignments each year that I look forward to with anticipation. Photographing the home that Joanne Plummer of Millstreet Florist decorates for the Homes For The Holiday is one of them. Six distinct homes in Ottawa and the surrounding area are decorated by the top floral designers in the region. All proceeds go to support the Maycourt Hospice, which gives people and their families a peaceful end for their loved ones.

On arriving home from Denver, Colorado, I was told to come to the barn. What, new hunting puppies have arrived already? No, much better! A beautiful filly foal staring up at me. I cried!!! We've called her "Maggie Muffin" after my great friend Margrit Wigger. She has changed our lives. My grandsons are excited about looking after her, my 85 year old mother asks about her every day and pushes her walker out to sit in the stall with her when the weather is warm. Even Ted & I get together twice a day now to take her out and bring her in. This holy terror at times is bringing a positive change for everyone.

Governor General Presents Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case

October 18th saw me once again at Rideau Hall to photograph five deserving recipients receive their medals from Governor General David Johnston. The honoured women were Marie Fish (Elgin, ON), Lucille Harper (Pomquet, NS), Kerline Joseph (Delson, QC), Anne Michaud (Montreal, QC) and Barbara Mowat (Abbotsford, BC).

Governor General Johnston and his charming wife were gracious hosts as they allowed the visitors to view the art collection of Rideau Hall and even enjoy the sun room. There was a definite feeling of warmth and happiness as everyone honoured the recipients. For more information on the medal winners, go to AWARDS.

They're Not Long Little

When my children were "little", I hired Roger Sands to professionally photograph them. We did not have much extra cash in those days, but I knew that I did not want to miss the small window of opportunity. I have never regretted my decision.

And now that I am a professional photographer, I am so thrilled when parents take the time to have their precious little ones photographed. One will never remember how adorable they were, when fifteen years later they are patting you on the head and looking at you as if, "You just don't get it". Those "little" years are to be cherished.

Romance In Denver

An opportunity to travel to Denver, Colorado to photograph Brittany and Kevin's wedding was not to be missed. The "Lumber Baron" a beautiful restored home, laden with flowers and a lovely garden setting was the gathering place for friends and families from Canada and the United States.

Brittany surrounded by six beautiful girls and an adorable flower girl was stunning. She and her father, Saleem caused a few tears to be shed as they walked through the garden to be presented to Kevin, a smiling groom.

Everyone enjoyed the old world ambiance of the Lumber Baron and the meal in the ballroom was delicious. Have I told you lately how much I love weddings?

Colorado, A Photographer's Dream

This past Thanksgiving weekend, I spent in Denver, Colorado. On Friday morning, I left the hotel at 4 a.m. to drive to Colorado Springs to view the Garden of the Gods at sunrise. In my excitement, I arrived 1 hour before sunrise and happily wandered around in the dark. But it was all worth it. As the first rays of red light hit the red stones, I was in heaven. Capturing this natural beauty in the early morning light had my whole body tingling.

By 8:30 a.m. I was off on tour to see Colorado plains and mountain country. My destination was Aspen Colorado and the famed Independence Trail. Oh what a trip! 400 miles later at 7:00 p.m. I was back in my hotel in Denver.

I started out in the Garden of the Gods and at the end of the day, I felt God had given me a guided tour of one of the most beautiful areas in the world. Man, it's great to be alive!

Country Charm

On his Saturday morning, "To Do List", he passed the Brigadoon Restaurant where there were a large number of beautifully restored antique vehicles parked on both sides of the road. Working closely with Cheryl Tataryn of Equine Canada, I had the opportunity to photograph the cover of the book that is going to be showcased at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky taking place at the moment. Ian Milar's stable, Millarbrook outside of Perth ON. was the site where we photographed a bridle from every discipline competing for Canada at the games. Inside, each discipline was explained and images of competitors and horses were included. The bridle of each discipline connected the information with the cover.

Thanks to the great work of Cheryl and her art director, this book is being nominated for National Awards. How fun to realize that my imags grace the cover and body of over 5,000 books that will be distributed at WEG.

Kentucky Bound

Jill Henselwood is off to represent Canada at WEG (World Equestrian Games - Kentucky). At the moment she is riding as an alternate and will ride in the first two classes of show jumping, after which the team will be finalized.

She and her groom Jessica came to have their photos updated for Equine Canada. With all of the organizational matters running around in these two heads, it's amazing how relaxed and comfortable they were in front of the camera.

This little pig went to market and oh boy was it fun. The Kemptville Kinsmen Farmers' Market hosted a "taster's delight" as local chefs paired with vendors of the market to create mouth watering and eye pleasing samples. Individuals purchased their "plate" for $10 which allowed them to sample exquisite cuisine from 12:00-4:00. The popular plates SOLD OUT rapidly, but the majority of the vendors had samples so that no-one was left without.

What a great idea to promote local producers, local restaurants and most importantly a pride in our community. Walking around, visiting with friends and enjoying the treats made for a great outing.

A Perfect Day For A Wedding

Colleen and Michael enjoyed exceptional good weather as they celebrated their love with family and friends. Every wedding is unique and on this day the closeness of family and the importance of the church was evident. Michael's great great grandfather had given the land for the church to be built and succeeding generations have kept that love of the church alive in supportive roles.

Colleen had a special way of keeping those members of both families who had passed on in her thoughts on this glorious day. Her bouquet had delicate pictures of each member attached with ribbon . As she walked down the aisle on her father's arm, the love and presence of those passed on, walked with her.

Warriors Elite Camp

A Sad Farewell

James Chamers Golf Classic - August 13/2010

Friends of my brother, James Chambers who passed away Nov/09, organized the James Chambers Golf Classic to remember the one we dearly miss. James with his easy going manner, love of sports and the ability to "laugh" and enjoy everyone, had always been surrounded by friends. This day was no different! The laughter started at check-in at Manderley Golf Course and continued to the steak barbecue at the Osgoode Legion.

One hundred and forty four golfers (that's a stretch for some) took part, while many others added to the festivities for the supper. The community support shown towards Jame's memory was heart rendering.
What a day! What a community! What outstanding people who put this together! Thank you seems too little to say.

One of the participants summed it up perfectly. "What a perfect day, the only one missing was James!"

Those at the wedding of Jennifer and Kevin will always remember the song that Aunt Lynda composed so that Josh, Richie Lee and Lynda could present to the new couple. Tears of joy rained freely.

The historical Burritts Rapids church was the setting for this long awaited moment, with family and longtime friends there to support them. I was especially pleased when the rain stopped to allow for great photo opportunities.

Romance at Strathmere Inn

Strathmere Inn always brings back childhood memories, as I remember riding to my girlfriend's house (Strathmere Inn) on my pony. We would both ride in the front riding ring then go inside for lemonade. Today this beautiful historical home is the cornerstone of Strathmere and the towering maple trees of the front lawn ensure the best quality light for pictures.

Michelle and Jack enjoyed the old world setting provided by the Inn on their wedding day. Michelle (Mitch) was a glowing bride and Jack's eyes shone with the love for this very special woman. Reference to their first date could always bring laughter and happiness on this great day.

It is a credit to Strathmere and their excellent staff to see the improvements and maturing of this extraordinary site. Beautiful Nadia arriving in her horse drawn carriage, driven by Gary Scharfe set the tone, that this was not going to be an ordinary day. The look in Dan's eyes as he viewed his stunning bride, showed the love and mutual admiration between this loving couple. As the saying goes, "Life is not the number of breaths you take, but the number of times my breath is taken away." This was truly a day of breathtaking moments and family love.

It is not uncommon for tears of joy and emotion to flow at weddings, but Tanya was determined not to cry at her wedding. Every time she felt the tears welling up, she would repeat to herself, "My Jeep, My Jeep!" , which would shift her attention to a happy place. There were lots of "My Jeeps" during the wedding day of Rich and Tanya, surrounded by five little angels and their best friends.

This is true for grass, gardens, farmers and photographers. There is nothing that can compare to the richness, saturation of color and sheer beauty of nature after a rain. These were the ideal conditions as I photographed the wedding of Meagan and Dean. The bridesmaids' dresses and the gorgeous floral bouquets added to the magnificent beauty of the day.
