What Is Professional?

The word "professional" is used often in the world of photography. What does professional really mean? For myself, it means to photograph someone/something and represent it to the best of my ability. The actual image is just the beginning.

I think of KARSH and his famous Winston Churchill portrait. The raw photograph Karsh took was not the finished product that the world has come to recognize as one of the greatest portraits ever and certainly the most famous one for Karsh.

The negative was not handed to Churchill to play with and become representative of Karsh's work. Professional retouching, skilled printing and the presentation in a professional manner was what Karsh released to the world.

This type of treatment is what I feel the professional photographer should be capable of delivering to their client, whether a wedding, portrait or commercial assignment.

The two examples here show what can be achieved. The first a beautiful white peacock displaying his splendor but unfortunately in a screened in pen. Should not his magnificence be the focal point, rather than the wire mesh surrounding him?

The second a romantic young couple on the shores of the Rideau Canal as the sun is setting. Should not the beautiful light shining on the couple producing the softness and romance of the moment be your lingering thought?
My thoughts to you, "Hire a professional".
